In an effort to ensure every child is prepared for school, the United Way of Greater Oswego County held its annual “Stuff a Bus” campaign recently at different bus locations around the county. The school supplies will now be divided among the nine districts in the coming days.
Humans have watched eclipses since before the dawn of written history, and during this long span of time our scientific understanding of the physical world has grown enormously. As a consequence, many of the older ideas we had about the causes and effects of total solar eclipses have been replaced by detailed physical explanations. Nevertheless, some older ideas seem remarkably resistant to replacement by the more scientifically-correct explanations.
Over the past few weeks, there has been a sharp increase in the number of Oswego County residents who needed post-exposure rabies treatments because of possible exposure to bats. Bats are typically more active this time of year and it’s critically important that people try to capture any bats that may have come in contact with a person or pet. Humans can develop rabies after undetected exposure to a rabid bat.
A simple rock, assuming we may walk past hundreds in a day, may not typically have the capability to bring a smile to our face. However, the Facebook group “Fulton NY Rocks” has taken aim to change that entirely. Stumbling upon a once simple, meaningless rock has taken new meaning since the more than 4,000 members of the group began using such rocks to promote kindness and positivity. Thousands of rocks, hand painted and designed with artistic imagery, uplifting messages, or positive phrases are being found all over the city with a simple message on the back: “If found, please post a picture to Fulton NY Rocks, then keep or re-hide!”
Lee Walker Jr., of 131 W. Albany St., has announced his candidacy for Oswego County Legislator, 15th District. No stranger to Oswego’s political scene, Walker Jr. previously served as Fifth Ward representative from 1993 to 1995 and 15th District legislator from 2008 to 2009.
To my fellow constituents, my name is Audrey L. Avery and I will be running for Fifth Ward city council this November. Being a life-long resident of this city, it gives me great pride to give back to the place that I call home, she said.
Residents in the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone surrounding the nuclear power plants in Oswego County recently received a new public information brochure with emergency planning information. An error was identified and corrected. A new brochure is being mailed to residents in the EPZ.
On Wednesday, August 9, Wade J. Midlar, 51, of 554 County Route 85 in the town of Granby was arrested by the New York State Police Major Crimes Unit for one count of Promoting an obscene Sexual Performance by a Child, a class “D” felony.
Owner said he’s surprised at the support from the grassroots group. He intends to continue fixing up the property and restoring it to the way it looked around 1900. He’s looking forward to working with the group and finding ways to save the building and appreciates their efforts.
Today (August 17), U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced $6,400,528 in federal funds for 62 New York community health centers. The funding will be allocated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration. In Oswego County, Northern Oswego County Health Services received funds.
