May 2011 Warmer And Wetter Than Average

The average temperature was 2.3 degrees warmer than average. And, the total precipitation, 6.66 inches, was 3.34 inches higher than normal. Last month also saw its share of high winds.
The average temperature last month was 33.5 degrees. That’s just 0.4-degree below normal. And, total precipitation for March was 2.44 inches. That is just 0.08-inch above average. Snowfall, however, was quite a bit below average.
It was a “relatively normal” Oswego winter, said Bill Gregway, the local weather observer for the National Weather Service said. “We have had much colder and we have had much warmer,” he added.

Except for some snow, and maybe a little wind once in a while, February was a rather average month, according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service. “It was a pretty normal February,” Gregway said.

The huge snowstorm creating havoc in the Midwest and elsewhere never really materialized in Central New York Wednesday. The Oswego-Fulton area received about 5.5 inches of snow with some freezing rain mixed in.

“We kind of had our January thaw on the 1st and a little into the 2nd,” said to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service. “One the 1st, there was only a trace of snow on the ground and it was rainy.” Over all, the average temperature was just about normal. Precipitation was 0.45-inch below normal, but snowfall was nearly 3 feet above average.

According to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service, the Port City officially got down to 11 degrees below zero. Even though it was bitterly cold – it has been worse, he noted. The record low for Jan. 24 is minus 13 degrees set way back in 1882.

The Port City plowed through its second heavy snowstorm of the year Wednesday. Nearly 8 inches of snow fell from late Tuesday night through Wednesday evening

Approximately 10 inches of heavy, wet snow fell on Oswego by 11 p.m. Tuesday. Oswego City Schools and Trinity Catholic School are operating under a two-hour delay today.
