Oz Girls Roll Into FLS With School Supplies
Members of the Oz Roller Girls team recently visited Frederick Leighton Elementary School to donate school supplies.
The Oz Roller Girls topped the Crown City Royal Pains 172-109 on the road to raise their record to 4-2 in their debut season of roller derby. Cohesive blocking and high-scoring nights from jammers Certified Public Assassin, with 66 points, and J-Rock-It, with 55, led Oz to the victory at the JM McDonald Sports Complex in Cortland.
At the recruitment night, taking place in the former Real Deals space in Oswego’s Midtown Plaza, attendees can learn more about how they can be part of roller derby in any number of skating or non-skating capacities, see an up-close demonstration of how the sport is played and ask questions about the sport.
Students Emma Draper, Laurie Edwards, Katherine Hansen, Lindi Himes and Jean Smyth study different subjects and come from various backgrounds, but they constitute a key part of the Oz Roller Girls, whose home debut as a flat-track derby team comes April 23 vs. the Crown City Royal Pains at Oswego’s Crisafulli Rink.
Oz Roller Girls was formed in May and its 40-plus members — including skaters, refs and NSOs (nonskating officials) — have been training for the upcoming home and away season. Oz’s first home bout is slated for 6 p.m., April 23, at the Crisafulli Rink at Fort Ontario.
