The Oz Roller Girls, the community’s new flat-track women’s roller derby league, has blocked out time to address a number of community causes, from hunger to veteran support to animal welfare. Leading up to their first bout, the team mounted a food drive to support the Oswego Salvation Army food services that help hungry families in the community.
The Dec. 7 ceremony held at the American Legion Hall in Minetto included a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Tribute. And, a special Thank a Service Member medallion was presented to the American Legion members in honor of their service to our country.
Veterans, friends and family gather to observe Veterans’ Day. The flags at Veterans’ Memorial Park were retired until next spring.
Thank a Service Member has a special event lined up for this year’s Veterans’ Day Salute. The PBS award-winning and 2010 Emmy nominated documentary, The Way We Get By, will be shown in Oswego on Nov. 10. Veterans’ Day ceremonies are scheduled for the following day in Veterans’ Memorial Park.
Ground breaking for Dakota Malone’s eagle project was held Thursday evening at the Hannibal Veterans Park.
“This day is in memory of those who made the supreme sacrifice, laying down their lives so you and I and our families have the opportunity to enjoy the freedoms that we have today,” said George Hoffman, the master of ceremonies.
Operation Uplink was launched in 1996 to connect active-duty troops and hospitalized veterans with their loved ones. The program uses contributions from supporters to purchase phone time for the men and women who are serving, or have served, as well as hospitalized veterans.
