Grant boosting locally grown produce bountiful for students, farmers

Robert Sova of SUNY Oswego, a junior business administration major and Dining Services student worker at Lakeside Dining Hall, draws a glass of fresh apple cider from Ontario Orchards in Oswego. The college bought 4,248 gallons of cider last year, and supplied unlimited cider in campus dining halls last month. Dining Services also promoted Food Day on Oct. 24, celebrating healthy fruits, vegetables and whole grains.The American Farmland Trust, an organization seeking to expand market competitiveness for local farmers, recently won a $99,427 federal grant to work with Oswego, New Paltz, Oneonta and the University at Albany to increase the use of fresh, frozen and processed vegetables raised by New York farmers as part of a pilot program that eventually would target all colleges and universities statewide.

Democrats Make Gains In County Legislature

According to unofficial vote results from Tuesday night show trouble for four legislators. Republican Louella LeClair has come up short in her bid for a new term. And, Doug Malone, the long-time representative of Oswego Town, is also on the short end of vote. Absentee votes will likely decide Malone’s fate next week.

Grants will Help Pay for Repairs to Historic Lodge at Camp Zerbe

The historic lodge at Camp Zerbe will be repaired in 2014 and made available to the public, thanks to grants from the Shineman Foundation and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Camp Zerbe, a 364-acre nature park located in the town of Williamstown, is owned by Oswego County and operated by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau.
