Warm Spring May Slow The Drip Of Syrup From Trees, But Boost Visitors To Maple Syrup Farms
The weather may be lousy for maple syrup production this year, but the tradeoff could be more New Yorkers celebrating the 15th annual Maple Weekend.
Tim Fowler, who runs Maple Hollow Farm in Hannibal with his wife Becky, says without three feet of snow on the ground and ice on the roads, more people could be going out to visit maple syrup farm open houses throughout the state.

Mark your calendars for the New York State Maple Producers Association’s annual “Maple Weekends.†Several local maple sugar bushes will be open for tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 20 and 21, and March 27 and 28.

Hannibal Students Take Budget Protest To Sandy Creek, Meet With Legislators
The occasion was a breakfast meeting between school district officials from around the county and some of the state lawmakers who represent them. The students were not invited, but showed up to seize the opportunity to lobby directly for help to keep their sports, music and arts.

Cheers For Students, Criticism For Teachers’ Union As Hannibal Meets On Its School Budget Deficit
Hannibal taxpayers praised students and denounced the teachers’ union as the district explained again why it may have to cut jobs, sports and music; raise taxes by a large amount; or both.
Several dozen students sat directly in front of the Board of Education, taking up the first five rows of the auditorium. They all wore white t-shirts that bore their new organization’s name: SOS, for “Save Our School”.

Dozens of students in Hannibal High School taped their mouths shut for the day Wednesday and staged a silent after-school protest in the village square against possible budget cuts that could claim their sports teams, bands, choruses and art classes.
