Hannibal Board Rejects Contract Extension for Superintendent

Here’s a rare thing: A Board of Education rejecting a contract extension for the Superintendent of Schools.  That’s what happened in Hannibal, and it may mean the end of Superintendent Mike DiFabio’s tenure at the end of the next school year.  Some of the reasons for the tension between administration and some board members was on display at a meeting Wednesday night.

Hannibal Budget Hearing Focuses on Cost of Contracts

District business official Nancy Henner runs through the  information in the budget public hearing, as Superintendent of Schools  Mike DiFabio looks on.Hannibal’s budget eliminates or downsizes 15 positions and raises the tax levy 2.99% in a year in which Gov. Paterson’s across-the-board education aid cuts will drain more than a million dollars from Hannibal. It cuts into the Reading First program credited with helping get the district off the state’s “in need of improvement” list, eliminates band for 5th graders and preserves varsity and modified sports.

Hannibal Voters To Decide Whether To Eliminate Board of Education Positions

Voters in Hannibal will decide whether their Board of Education should stay at 9 members or reduce to 7.  The board last week approved putting the question on the May 18 ballot, which includes the district’s proposed budget for 2010 – 2011.  So, if voters pick three new board members, bringing the board back to 9 members, at the same time that they approve cutting the board to 7 members, how will that work?

Hannibal Board Restores Phys Ed Position, Approves Budget For Public Vote

The Hannibal school board Wednesday night unanimously approved a budget for the next school year. It calls for $25,452,989 in spending, and requires 2.99% tax levy to plug an approx. $1.7m deficit. It resembles the same budget the board rejected last week, with one slight tweak. Instead of eliminating 10 entire teaching positions, this revised version restores a part-time physical education teacher.

Ambivalent Hannibal School Board Rejects Budget, Will Have To Approve It Next Week

They put off the day of decision for one more week.

Frustrated members of the Hannibal Board of Education could not agree to approve a budget for next school year. The budget failed, 4-3, in front of a standing-room-only audience of students and taxpayers. The board will have to enact a budget next week and it is likely to be the same budget they voted against Wednesday night.

Grant Helps Hannibal Music Students Take Field Trip

Secured by music teacher, Shirley Terrinoni, the field trip grant gave students a chance to learn about careers in the area of music, as well as numerous other related jobs.
